ABOUT the CLASSES & TEACHER
Creative art expression can help children build confidence, develop patience & concentration, unleash their creative potential, become a creative thinker, problem solver and gain autonomy when required to make decisions while working on a variety of art projects. In addition, studies have shown children can improve academic skills in the “core curriculum” areas when expressing themselves artistly.
Art is an amazing way to express oneself through the adventure motivated by one's "heart and imagination," developed through practice, and eventually leading to an understanding of the different processes and styles of art.
Stimulating, enriching and fun ART CLASSES are being offered in a comfortable, safe and child-centered environment in the Hemet/San Jacinto area by a credentialed teacher with more than 35 years experience & a love for art and children ~ the last 26 years in Hemet. Mary has taught grades 1 through 12 in private and public schools, for children in "Vacation Bible Schools," has been a Home & Hospital teacher for ill children, an academic tutor, and an Educational Facilitator for Julian Charter School when it first started up. Mary is the mother of 3 adult children and a grandma to 3 little ones who like to create special projects in her "art room."
Classes are designed to offer a friendly, encouraging, and accepting environment for children to discover their own creative vision, explore self-expression and communication through the visual arts. It is sad that so many art programs have been cut out of the schools' curriculum today!!
Students meet in small groups of 4 to 8 in Mary's home art studio/classroom. All materials are provided. Classes are 90 minutes long (fee is $12) - allowing time for instruction and moving into the “right brain/creative hemisphere." Some classes meet every other week and are 2 hours long- (fee is $16). Students are encouraged to learn new skills & work with new materials - while enjoying themselves with other children in a fun, child-centered environment. Class days and times are flexible and determined by the children's ages, experience & interests, although when siblings want to be together, there can be a range of ages. Classes are offered during the daytime for home schooled children & there are mid-afternoon classes as well. At this time, classes are held all day on Tuesdays, but another day can be added if there are at least 4 children interested.
The students study famous artists and create projects in the artists' styles. It is exciting when your child recognizes a famous artist's work! Projects involve working with different types of paint, pastel crayons, papier mache', handbuilding with clay (I have a kiln!), and drawing with pencils/charcoal, and colored pencils. We use different papers and a variety of materials for mixed media projects - too much to mention here. Students revisit skills learned and build on them. Various art terminology is learned and used, and students gain confidence in their understanding of the art world.
